The Story Behind the 2026 Calendar Cover Art, Richard Haden’s “Peaceful Meadow”

“Painting provides hours of pleasure and relaxation. I am fascinated by how very ordinary things like a bucket can bring life to a painting. Painting is a lot more fun when you realize there are no mistakes that can not be painted over.”

Artist behind "Peaceful Meadow"

“I was invited to a sip & paint session and discovered that painting was interesting to me. It initially started as a creative way to occupy some of my time. I spent three to four months researching what was needed to begin my own personal painting endeavor. I bought books and watched on-line videos. One recommendation that made sense in the beginning was to start with the best material(s) available.

I decided to take up acrylic painting because it met my interest and was adaptable to my space. I bought a good grade of stretched canvas, solid acrylic paints, a good easel, good brushes of various styles, drawing paper and other various items. My first paintings were done and painted over and done again. I learned that the right brush, the right mix of color, the right touch, the right consistency of paint and water were all important.

Like any endeavor, it takes practice to make something look realistic. Like a tree for example. At first, I followed video lessons, picking ones that added new skills. I have now painted over 150 pictures. The painting on the cover of this year’s calendar started from an idea to paint a wren in the grass. However, I needed a place for the wren to perch. adding the idea to paint a wooden bucket.

I can spend three or four hours painting and wonder where the time has gone. I am still learning and am a long way from the ability of my fellow artists. I think painting is therapeutic. I paint for the joy and apologize to my kids for all the paintings they will be left with.”
